Reflexology

“To administer medicine after an illness begins is like digging a well after becoming thirsty or casting weapons after battle has been engaged.”

— The Nei Jing.

Reflexology is the technique of applying gentle pressure to the feet or hands to bring about a state of deep relaxation and to stimulate the body’s own healing processes. It is a natural, non-invasive therapy that is used to help restore harmony between the body’s systems and maintain overall equilibrium. (homeostasis) The fundamental premise of reflexology is that manipulation of the correct reflexes may help to clear energy blocks and stimulate the body’s own healing processes to correct any imbalances in the associated systems. No medication, no artificial stimulants, just a nurturing and caring environment in which to start healing.

Reflexology acts as a facilitator and does not claim to cure illness, but it can complement conventional medicine, helping to support the body through the stresses imposed by medication. Above all, one of the most significant strengths of reflexology is its ability to relieve the symptoms of chronic stress which can be so damaging to us all. It is an enjoyable and effective way of making time for yourself and can be especially important if you are experiencing the burdens of being a carer. I am not a great fan of the expression but, do not underestimate the fundamental importance of “me-time.” (which has been so horribly corrupted by TV adverts for shampoo, mascara, ice cream and chocolate!). If it’s relaxation and nurture that you need, then reflexology is for you.

A Reflexology treatment

The whole appointment will usually take about 75 minutes, the actual treatment will last about 55 minutes. Your first appointment will take longer (about 1 hour and 40 mins) to allow time for for us to discuss your circumstances and lifestyle. With your help, I will then determine areas which may require extra attention. The treatment regime will be adapted as the course progresses to suit the findings which will usually change over time. Treatment is most commonly a gentle manipulation of the reflexes of your feet, although in some circumstances the hands may be treated instead. All you will need to do is relax and allow your body to absorb the effects of the reflexology. (A slower brain-wave state is the desired outcome but sometimes this may take several treatments.)

It is a gentle and pain-free therapy, although you may experience some heightened sensitivity in areas which are out of balance. During the treatment, I will use a massage medium which may be oil or balm or powder depending on the type of treatment that has been decided upon. Before your treatment, your feet should be clean and your shoes and socks will need to be removed. I will also need to access your ankle and lower leg, so please avoid tight ankle-fitting trousers if possible. After a treatment, some people feel a little “woozy” but you will be given time to allow you to return to earth, and driving home (with care) after your session should be perfectly ok. Off-street parking is available at my home.

Will Reflexology help you?

Reflexology works in a holistic way to treat the person and not the condition. Therefore, as every person is unique, people react differently to the therapy. Some will feel benefit quite quickly, whilst others will take longer to respond. Reflexology will start adjustments from the very first treatment, but changes and improvements to your condition can be subtle and may take some time to become apparent. From the very first session, it is helping the various systems within the body to start working in harmonious unison. It is probable that a course of reflexology will be recommended to help you return to an improved state of unity.

In a course of treatment, appointments are usually about 10 to 14 days apart initially, stretching to about 3 to 4 weekly intervals after the first few sessions. Regular treatments are beneficial in helping to maintain well-being and harmony. Some people just have an occasional single reflexology treatment solely for the relaxation that it brings. Everyone is an individual and has their own requirements and you will never be pressurised into buying. There are a few conditions, such as infectious diseases or severe cardiovascular disease which mean that reflexology may not be a suitable treatment for you. Please feel free to ask for advice.
